30 CITIES TO TAKE PART IN THIS YEAR’S EDITION OF THE ‘FROM SOURCE TO THE SEA’ PROJECT

30 cities will participate in this year’s edition of the environmental project From Source to the Sea organized by Coca-Cola, Konzum, Jutarnji list and the Association of Cities.

The following cities will participate in the Small Cities (with a population of up to 10 thousand) category: Benkovac, Otočac, Pakrac, Vrgorac, Lipik, Čabar, Ludbreg, Pleternica, Beli Manastir, Zlatar, Varaždinske Toplice, Korčula, Vodnjan – Dignano, Zabok and Stari Grad (Hvar).

The following cities will participate in the Medium-Sized Cities (with a population of 10 thousand to 35 thousand) category: Virovitica, Čakovec, Daruvar, Vinkovci, Duga Resa, Zaprešić, Labin and Rovinj – Rovigno.

Karlovac, Rijeka, Zadar, Pula – Pola, Osijek, Velik Gorica and Dubrovnik are this year’s participants in the Big Cities (with a population of more than 35 thousand) category.

In addition to promoting the protection of Croatia’s water resources and proper waste management practices, the goal of this project is to plant trees in urban settings to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and lower air temperatures. All cities desiring to afforest some of their areas were allowed to apply for the contest within a period of one month (15 February to 15 March). Each city will be required to organize a one-day cleaning campaign in cooperation with local NGOs and volunteers between 15 April and 14 June. Points will be earned based on the number of volunteers and amounts of waste collected, and the top-ranking three cities will share EUR 45,000 in prize money, intended for purchasing tree seedlings for urban afforestation. Planting campaigns will be arranged with the winners in the autumn, from September to November, and special plaques will be awarded to them on completion of the activities.

Last year, 28 cities applied for the contest as part of From Source to the Sea and almost five thousand volunteers removed and properly disposed of 152 tons of packaging waste. Varaždin, Lipik i Vinkovci were the top three performers.

Coca-Cola launched the From Source to the Sea project in Croatia in 2018, in cooperation with government institutions and civil society associations. Three years ago, Jutarnji list joined us as a partner, followed by Konzum in 2022 and the Association of Cities last year. The project also received support from the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development and the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology in Zagreb.

From Source to the Sea is part of a long-term comprehensive plan dubbed World Without Waste, whereby Coca-Cola committed, among other things, to help collect and recycle a bottle or can for each one we sell by 2030 and ensure that recycled plastic accounts for at least 50 percent of all primary packaging materials we use. In addition, all primary packaging will be recyclable by 2025, which has already been accomplished in Croatia. In recent years, we have reduced our overall use of plastic by a quarter by using lighter bottles. Coca-Cola made a new step toward accomplishing its World Without Waste vision in late May of 2023, when it introduced attached plastic bottle caps to its consumers in the Croatian market.

In December 2023 Coca-Cola has once again been ranked as the world’s most sustainable beverage company and this is also the 13th consecutive year it has featured among the top three performers. This news has also been recently published by the S&P (Standard & Poor’s) credit rating agency in The S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2024, thus confirming the company’s number one global ranking in the beverage industry. The company’s score positions it in the top 1% of 9,400 companies across 62 industries. The company is also on CDP’s 2023 Supplier Engagement Leaderboard and CDP’s A List for its commitment to transparency on climate and water, whereby it joined the small number of companies that have achieved a double-A rating from CDPT. These accolades are consistent with the independent ratings awarded to Coca-Cola HBC as part of other reputable surveys and sustainability indices, such as MSCI ESG, CDP, FTSE4Good and FTSE Russell ESG.
