32 Cities to Participate in This Year’s Edition of the "From Source to Sea" Project

This year’s edition of the environmental project From Source to Sea, organized by Coca-Cola, Konzum, Jutarnji List, and the Association of Cities, will feature 32 cities - the highest number since the project’s launch.
In the small city category (up to 10,000 residents), the participating cities are: Pakrac, Korčula, Benkovac, Otočac, Vrgorac, Varaždinske Toplice, Beli Manastir, Vodnjan, Valpovo, Lipik, Crikvenica, Vrlika, Pag, Prelog, and Rab. In the medium city category (10,000 to 35,000 residents), the participating cities are: Našice, Sveta Nedelja, Jastrebarsko, Virovitica, Koprivnica, Zaprešić, Daruvar, Poreč, Vinkovci, and Solin. The large city category (over 35,000 residents) includes: Velika Gorica, Varaždin, Rijeka, Pula, Osijek, Dubrovnik, and Zadar.
The From Source to Sea project promotes the protection of water resources, responsible waste management, and the afforestation of urban environments to reduce carbon footprints and lower air temperatures. Cities applied to participate through a competition held from February 17 to March 17. Their commitment includes organizing a one-day cleaning event in collaboration with local NGOs and volunteers between April 14 and June 23. Cities will be scored based on the number of volunteers and the amount of waste collected. A prize fund of €45,000 will be awarded to the top three cities, intended for purchasing tree seedlings for urban afforestation. Planting activities will be coordinated with the winning cities from September to November, after which special plaques will be awarded.
Last year, 30 cities participated in the From Source to Sea project, with 2,200 volunteers removing 420 tons of packaging waste from nature. The most successful cities were Velika Gorica (large), Vinkovci (medium), and Benkovac (small).
The From Source to Sea project was launched by Coca-Cola in Croatia in 2018. Since then, 107 packaging waste collection actions have been organized, with more than 9,700 volunteers collecting 644 tons of waste - nearly 74 truckloads. Four years ago, Jutarnji List joined the project as a partner, and in 2022, Konzum and the Association of Cities in the Republic of Croatia also became partners. The project is supported by the Ministry of Environment and the Green Transition, as well as the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology at the University of Zagreb.
