A Study of Coca-Cola’s Socioeconomic Impact in Croatia was presented today at the Excellence in Challenges conference, including its business results achieved in 2021. After the presentation, the heads of major companies in beverage manufacturing and distribution, retail, hotel and hospitality industries and media analyzed the key challenges faced by the Croatian economy and society.
The Socioeconomic Impact Study was developed by international consultants Steward Redqueen and shows that Coca-Cola has retained a considerably wide range of impacts in the Croatian market both with regard to economic and fiscal indicators and in the field of social responsibility and community investment. Coca-Cola employs almost a quarter of the overall workforce in the soft drinks industry and each job supports further 14 jobs in the Croatian economy. In 2021, Coca-Cola accounted for 0.8% of all tax contributions paid in Croatia through its operation and cooperation with as many as 32,164 customers and 686 suppliers.
In 2012, Coca-Cola became the first company in Croatia to introduce regular publication of socioeconomic studies developed according to internationally recognized methodologies, allowing it to monitor and compare its progress in this field.
“Having operated in the Croatian market for almost 55 years, we have been leaders in changes and good business practices and have become a favorite brand among Croatian consumers. Coca-Cola’s manufacturing and distribution activities directly and indirectly result in a total of HRK 2.195 billion in taxes, wages and income, which accounts for 0.5% of Croatia’s GDP. Coca-Cola’s value chain in Croatia supports 7 050 jobs, accounting for 0.4% of all jobs in Croatia. In addition, Coca-Cola has doubled the amount of its financial investments in the community since 2017. Over the past five years, we have invested almost eight million kunas in socially responsible projects,” said Ruža Tomić Fontana, CEO of Coca-Cole HBC Adria.
Oleg Butković, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, and Dubravka Šuica, Vice President of the European Commission for Demographics and Democracy, also addressed the audience.
“Being excellent in relatively normal times is in itself a success, but achieving excellence in times of crisis, which present challenges and uncertainty, is a big bite to chew, requiring further effort, ability, appropriate responses and agility – I am sure our business leaders, some of whom are with us today, are aware of this,” said Oleg Butković, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, concluding as follows: “Our business leaders are crucial in this respect by driving our development, which is why we remain open to cooperation to allow Croatia to achieve its economic growth as envisaged and, where applicable, relieve some of the burden on Croatian businesses and raise its citizens’ standards.“
Dubravka Šuica, Vice President of the European Commission for Demographics and Democracy, underlined in her video message that a better future, stimulative entrepreneurship and excellence will not happen by themselves. She also underscored the importance of including all levels of decision-making to take the desired course for our society through joint efforts.
The presentation of the Study’s results was followed by a panel discussion of how businesses can use excellence in their processes to generate new value and be change leaders. The panel discussion was moderated by Andrea Doko Jelušić, Executive Director at AmCham Croatia, and attended by Zoran Mitreski, Konzum’s Chairman of the Management Board, Ana Hanžeković Krznarić, Hanza Media’s Chairwoman of the Management Board, Josipa Jutt Ferlan, General Manager of Hilton Zagreb, and Marko Gajski, Chef at LD Restaurant, in addition to Ruža Tomić Fontana. Each participant explained what business excellence meant to him or her and how they achieved it and shared it with the community. They underscored the importance of partnering and training to facilitate overcoming challenges and described how others should be encouraged to become excellent.
