More than 5,000 Slavonski Brod residents marked Sava River Day with a popular Fisijada (fish stew competition) in which as many as 163 competition teams partook.
Slavonski Brod, July 3, 2010 – After the successful Sava Fairs held in Zagreb on May 29, in Sisak on June 5 and in Zupanja on June 11, as well as the promotion of the Sava cravat in Davor on May 31, the finale of the socially responsible project Our Beautiful Sava, which was organised by the Tourism Board and City of Slavonski Brod, was held yesterday in an area between the promenade along Sava River and Marsonija Stadium.
The Sava Fair hosted more than 5,000 Slavonski Brod residents who marked Sava River Day with the tasting of traditional food and beverages and the presentation of traditional crafts, trades and artifacts from the Sava region. The central event was the opening of the Slavonski Brod Fish Stew Cooking Championship, i.e. the so-called Fisijada, for which as many as 163 competition teams from the entire county had registered. The assessment committee pronounced Vinko Smoljanec from Vrbje close to Nova Gradiska the best chef, while the fish specialities prepared by the team from the Slovenian town of Celje, the sister city of Slavonski Brod, took away the title as the most original specialities.
Visitors could also enjoy the accompanying entertainment and music program, as well as the photo exhibition Life along Sava River over the Centuries.
The fair was announced in Slavonski Brod on June 18 through the introduction of a unique continental tourism souvenir, i.e. a memory stick contained in housing made from millennia-old oak from the Sava River bed. The first series of twenty memory sticks, which Coca‑Cola presented to the City of Slavonski Brod as a gift and as a pledge for the touristic future of the city, are contained in housing made from wood that had been retrieved from Sava River and which is 3,200, 5,800 and 8,290 years old. The aim was to point out the link between Slavonski Brod and Sava River and the longstanding tradition of industrial technology and production in this city. The memory sticks are the idea of young innovators from the Sigma Investors’ Society.
The main organisers of the Sava Fair in Slavonski Brod, the Tourism Board and the City of Slavonski Brod, took over and successfully organised the big finale of the national project Our Beautiful Sava this year, which was jointly initiated by the Ministry of Regional Development, Forestry and Water Management, the International Sava River Basin Commission and Coca‑Cola HBC Hrvatska in cooperation with Hrvatske vode and the Agency for Inland Waterways. The joint goal of all partners is to promote awareness about the importance to preserve Croatian waters and water potentials and to promote eco-tourism and touristic contents on sustainability bases.
On a national level, the project was also supported by the Croatian Tourism Board and the Plodine supermarket chain this year.
