Zagreb, June 6, 2009 - On the embankment of the Sava River in Zagreb, a fair was held within the framework of the project “Our Beautiful Sava” with the aim to encourage as many people as possible to start returning to life along the river, as is the case with residents of European cities. The fair is only one of the activities within the project that will be carried out in four Croatian cities on the Sava River – Zagreb, Sisak, Slavonski Brod and Županja - throughout the month of June.
The organisers, who also came up with the idea, i.e. the International Commission for the Sava River Basin, the Ministry of Regional Development, Forestry and Water Management, the Ministry of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, with the support of the company Coca‑Cola HBC Croatia, wanted to point out that the Sava River possesses unused potential, above all in terms of tourism, recreation and sports.
Traditional customs, trades and gastronomy related to the Sava River and Zagreb were introduced at the fair, while craftsmen and associations that promote traditional values presented their skills and products and reminded all those present about the spirit of old Zagreb.
Guests could also view the travelling photo exhibition “Life on the Sava River through the Centuries”, which was put together in cooperation with the Sisak City Museum, the Brodsko Posavlje Museum, the Native Museum “Stjepan Gruber” from Županja and the Končar Canoe Club. The numerous visitors who found themselves close to Boćarski dom that day, next to which the Sava Fair was held between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., could convince themselves that the Sava River still has a lot to offer.
Apart from their impressions in relation to the fair and the fact that something was finally being organised along the Sava River, they also proposed contents that were missing and through which people would be encouraged even more to come to the river. “It is nice here and I was surprised that something had been organised. I went out for a walk by accident and saw people and booths, so I came to see what was going on.
I don’t remember ever having seen anything being organised on the embankment and I like this”, said Maja Urban. She described the fair as “small, but nice and pleasant”, and added that she would take advantage of this rare chance to see what was being offered and, of course, taste things if she found something interesting. In her opinion, Zagreb should definitely return to the Sava River, which is actually magnificent, but nobody knows this anymore because people rather go to shopping centers than take a walk along the river.
