The “Moj bicikl” association and the City of Zagreb with support from Coca‑Cola HBC Croatia will once again mark European Mobility Week from September 16-22 this year through a series of activities aimed to promote the use of bicycles as well as healthy and active lifestyles. This was announced at a press conference today at which Jelena Pavičić Vukičević, the deputy mayor of the City of Zagreb, Chris Hodge, the deputy ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Croatia, Jadranka Veselić Bruvo, the head of the City Office for the Strategic Planning and Development of the City, Marinka Bakula Anđelić, the assistant head for people with disabilities at the City Office for Social Welfare and Persons with Disabilities, and Darinka Jug, the president of the “Moj bicikl” association addressed those present.
On this occasion, a donation by the “Moj bicikl” association was presented to Zagreb’s city administration, i.e. three bicycles which will be at the disposal of city administration employees to come to work or for recreational use. The donation is part of the “Bike to Work” project which was initiated by the “Moj bicikl” association and Coca‑Cola HBC Croatia to promote the use of bicycles as a healthy and cheap alternative to public transportation.
“The City of Zagreb has been partaking in the commemoration of European Mobility Week since 2003 and the list of activities is growing by the year. We are constantly amongst the 10 cities which are leaders in terms of activities within the framework of this manifestation in Europe and we are pleased that our campaigns contribute to healthier lives and a better environment. We would like to thank in particular the “Moj bicikl” association and our partners such as Coca‑Cola for their cooperation”, said Jelena Pavičić Vukičević, the deputy mayor of the City of Zagreb, during the signing of the 2011 European Mobility Week Charter.
Darinka Jug, the president of the “Moj bicikl” association, announced Zagrebačka žbica and pointed out: “Zagrebačka žbica is not a race, which our participants already know very well, but it’s a bike ride through which we promote the equality of bicyclists in traffic and encourage traffic participants to mutual tolerance. I invite everyone to join us on Thursday and to thus support the promotion of bicycling as an alternative means of transportation in Zagreb”.
On the occasion of the beginning of European Mobility Week, Boška Trbojević, the director of the Public Relations & Communication Department of Coca‑Cola HBC Croatia, said: “Coca‑Cola HBC Croatia is continuously supporting the organization of Zagrebačka žbica, PARKiranje and other activities within the framework of European Mobility Week aimed to promote active lifestyles, which is in line with corporate social responsibility guidelines. We are pleased that Zagreb’s residents have acknowledged this campaign and that the response is bigger by the year.”
During European Mobility Week, the “Moj bicikl” association will organize a range of activities at a special information and education booth on Petar Preradović Square to promote the use of bicycles. Attendants will thus be able to try riding a scooter on Friday, September 16, at 6 p.m. or an electric bike on Saturday, September 17, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. At the “alternative flea market” on Sunday, September 18, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. visitors will be able to buy, sell, give away or exchange bicycles and additional gear.
Coca‑Cola HBC Croatia in cooperation with the company Ex-Alto will once again organise the entertainment and recreational weekend program PARKiranje, which will be held in Zagreb’s Bundek Park on Saturday, September 17, and Sunday, September 18. The aim of PARKiranje is to promote exercising and activities in parks modelled after global metropolises, hence people of all age groups will have the chance to join various activities such as morning gymnastics with stretching exercises, exercises for mothers involving prams, sports workshops for young people, dancing workshops, competitions and many others. The prominent couple Mirna Maras and Mario Valentić will be heading various creative workshops for the youngest and an exercise program for mothers. They will be joined by renowned athletes and recreational athletes from the world of music, media and politics.
Between 10 a.m. and noon on Monday, September 19, educators and children from the Botinec Kindergarten will present their longstanding work on teaching pre-school kids how to ride a bike and about traffic rules at the booth of the “Moj bicikl” association. Elderly people will be able to try out tricycles for adults on Tuesday, September 20, between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., while everyone interested will be able to try out various self-propelled means of transportation on Wednesday, September 21, between 10 a.m. and 6 pm. Throughout European Mobility Week people will also be able to find out more about various alternative means of transportation at the booth of the “Moj bicikl” association and to partake in various surveys on bicycling in Zagreb.
The finale of European Mobility Week, i.e. European Car Free Day, is marked on September 22 to familiarize people in Europe about the advantages of different means of transportation and to draw their attention to new ideas and solutions regarding traffic in urban centers. The “Moj bicikl” association and Coca‑Cola HBC Croatia will mark this with Zagrebačka žbica, i.e. a bike ride through downtown Zagreb which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Attendants will start gathering and starting numbers will be handed out on the Petar Preradović Square at 5 p.m. The bike convoy will hit the road at 6 p.m. and will ride through downtown under police escort over a distance of 7 kilometres. Coca‑Cola HBC Croatia will provide all Zagrebačka žbica participants with refreshments by distributing Bistra water bottles, and it will reward the luckiest participant with a Bistra bike in the ensuing raffle. After the bike ride, a rock concert will be organised through which the organisers will celebrate the tenth anniversary of Zagrebačka žbica.
